SHP regularly offers small group training seminars in addition to the SHP Producer Seminar in the spring.
Seminar topics can also be customized to fit specific requests and can be given at any suitable location, including on farm.

The following is a list of the small group seminars routinely available:
Breeding Seminar:
This half-day (classroom) seminar is targeting anyone wanting to learn some fundamental basics regarding management of the breeding sow. It is suitable for new people to the industry, as well as old timers wanting a re-fresher!
Focus is on the biology of reproduction, including the impact of feeding, proper boar use, breeding barn management, and appropriate, strategic hormone use.
Participants will leave this seminar with a solid understanding of all that goes into achieving a great farrowing rate!

Farrowing Seminar:
A half-day (classroom) course aimed at teaching some basic farrowing barn management techniques. Included are discussions on some of the biology behind farrowing from induction to the actual farrowing process. Participants will also learn the basics of lactation feeding, piglet management, fostering, and what makes a “good” pig at weaning!

Nursery Barn Management:
This half-day (class-room) course looks at properly managing the nursery barn to meet the needs of a weaned pig. Discussion will focus on “the first 72 hours”, temperature requirements, disease management, feed budgeting, vaccination programs, etc.

Bugs and Drugs!
A half-day seminar to help producers understand some common swine diseases, including the disease process and some principles of disease control. Discussion will include the differences between viruses and bacteria, how the pig’s immune system responds to disease, and how and why we use antibiotics and vaccines. This is a useful seminar for people in all aspects of pig production from the farrowing room all the way out to the finisher floor!
